County Judge Wade McKinney and I discussed the current status of COVID-19 and vaccinations in Henderson County this week.

COVID hospitalizations have dropped to levels we haven't seen since July 2020 and Gov. Abbott's order ending the mask mandate went into effect on Wednesday.

The big questions around the county right now have to do with vaccine distribution and things are looking up on that end, as well, according to McKinney.

"This process is mirroring almost exactly, in time and scope, the roll out of (COVID) testing," he said. "It took about three months into the initial testing process before you got to see testing and the benefits of it in rural East Texas. And that is what's happening with the vaccination."

Henderson County held a COVID-19 vaccination clinic Monday and there will be another vaccination clinic at the Henderson County Senior Citizens Building this Friday.

Friday's clinic will include the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Texas Military Department and will offer up to 500 vaccinations. This clinic is targeted at Texans 65 years and older and will use the Pfizer vaccine.

The vaccination clinic on Monday was put together by the County and Family Circle of Care. McKinney said there are plans for more of those clinics in the near future.

Individuals being contacted for these clinics are those who have signed up on Henderson County's vaccine waiting list. If you have not signed up already, you can put your name on the County waiting list here. https://bit.ly/countyregistration
