The Athens Hornets (8-2) are gearing up for their bi-district playoff game against the Van Vandals (7-3) this Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Tyler Rose Stadium, with Athens as the home team.
Hornets Finish Strong with Win Over Bullard
The Athens Hornets finished their regular season last Friday with a win, beating Bullard 41-6. After Bullard's opening touchdown, the Hornets took charge, scoring three times in the second quarter. This offensive explosion, combined with key turnovers forced by the defense, led Athens to a dominant 27-6 lead by halftime.
The win completed an 8-2 regular season record for the Hornets. This marks only the fourth time in 28 years that Athens has reached eight regular season wins, and the first time since 2013. This accomplishment reflects the team's consistent effort and the culture of high expectations that Coach Harrell has instilled.
"The playoffs are now an expectation here. It's not a goal," he said.
Scouting the Vandals
Van enters the game with a 7-3 record, having faced tough competition in their district. Their three losses came against playoff contenders Pleasant Grove, Gilmer, and Longview Pine Tree, all decided by close margins. Coach Harrell acknowledged the Vandals' strengths, describing them as a "really good football team, really well-coached."
Offensively, Van mirrors Athens with a balanced attack, using a similar scheme and formations. Their key weapon is a 6'4" receiver who averages over 10 catches per game. Defensively, they are fundamentally sound and aggressive. Coach Harrell expects a physical battle at the line of scrimmage.
"They're a really, really good football team," said Coach Harrell. "They're really well-coached, play extremely hard and play really confidently. So it'll be a great challenge for us."
Keys to the Game
Coach Harrell outlined the following keys to the game for the Hornets:
Word of the Week: "How Bad Do You Want It?" -- The team's actions and commitment throughout the week will determine their success on Friday night. "Anybody can say they want it, but your actions speak to really what you want to do," said Coach Harrell.
Communication: With both teams familiar with each other's schemes, the Hornets will have to change some things up so they're not predictable. Clear communication and execution will be crucial.
Winning the Battle Up Front: The offensive line must maintain their technique and fight to stay on blocks against Van's aggressive defense.
Stopping the Run: The Hornets' defense wants to shut down Van's rushing attack and force them into passing situations.
Believe: The team must believe in themselves and play with confidence, regardless of external opinions or predictions.
The Crowd Factor
Michael and Coach Harrell stressed the importance of a strong and vocal crowd at Tyler Rose Stadium.
"The crowd could be a big factor in this game," Coach Harrell said, urging fans to be ready to make some noise Friday night.
