This week, Michael sits down with TVCC Head Football Coach Sherard Poteete to talk about the upcoming game against Kilgore College and how the team is bouncing back after a tough outing against Navarro.
Sweatshirt Weather
Coach Poteete said it's finally hoodie weather in Texas, and that means it's perfect for football. After a long stretch of summer, cooler temperatures settled in and the team is feeling good about it. TVCC took advantage of the fall break to practice in the mornings.
Bouncing Back from a Tough Game
The Cardinals had a tough time last weekend, losing to Navarro. Coach Poteete said the team is disappointed but ready to get back to work. "If the sun rises on Sunday morning, then it's time to go back to work," Coach Poteete said. He added that the players came in, watched film, and had a high-energy practice. "The game plan is in, the kids went back to work, and they're competing," he said. The focus now is on putting the loss behind them and being ready to compete again this Saturday.
One Game at a Time
Even though the Cardinals (3-3, 1-3) aren't where they want to be in the standings, they still have a chance to make a run. Coach Poteete said the key is staying in the moment. "We can't win three games Saturday. We can only win one game Saturday," he said. The goal is to take things one play, one series, one game at a time, and focus on taking care of business against Kilgore.
Kilgore College Preview
Kilgore College (4-1, 2-1) is coming to Bruce Field this Saturday, and Coach Poteete said the Cardinals know it will be a battle. Kilgore has a strong receiving corps and an active defense. "Their defensive line is really active. They're big on the interior. They've got four 300-pounders that they can kind of roll in," Coach Poteete said. He added that their defensive ends are long and fast, and their linebackers are aggressive. "It's going to be a very good team that we're playing this Saturday," he said.
Line of Scrimmage Battle
One of the key match-ups this weekend will be at the line of scrimmage, with both teams boasting talented, aggressive defensive lines. "We get to show up and line up and get to go play football on a Saturday afternoon. I mean, what more could you ask for?" Coach Poteete said.
This Week
