The TVCC Cardinals are scheduled to open their 2021 fall season at Bruce Field 1 p.m. Saturday against the ASA Miami Silver Storm.
(1:25) If you haven't heard of the Silver Storm, don't feel alone. ASA Miami claims to be the only NJCAA football team in Florida and usually plays East Coast teams.
TVCC Coach Sherard Poteete said the search to find quality non-conference opponents led to bringing the Silver Storm to Athens.
"They're used to traveling," he said. "They're looking forward to coming to Texas and playing someone from our conference."
While TVCC doesn't know a lot about ASA Miami, they do know they are big and aggressive.
"They are some athletic dudes," Coach Poteete said.
Defensively, the Silver Storm is looking to attack. The defensive line wants to penetrate and disrupt the opposition.
Offensively, Coach Poteete said, ASA Miami will run a spread offense and try to have a run-pass balance. They are looking to get their players in space.
"They have talent," he said.
(6:46) TVCC has experienced a lot of turnover since the spring, so this will be a new Cardinal team taking the field Saturday.
"I'm looking forward to seeing these guys compete," said Coach Poteete.
The Cardinals will have new players stepping up in some key positions, particularly at linebacker and offensive line.
To balance that out, TVCC has experience along the defensive line and at the skill positions on offense.
Coach Poteete said he believes the most disciplined team will win on Saturday.
"It's game one, there's going to be some mistakes made," he said, "but can we be a disciplined football team?"
** Coach Poteete talks about several players in the podcast who will be playing important roles. Listen starting at the 6:46 mark. **
