Time for Upward Flag Football with Blake Williamson

By Michael V. Hannigan

Imagine a football program where kids not only learn to pass and catch, but also grow in character and faith. Well, there's no need to imagine. Athens Upward Flag Football is now accepting registration through July 31.

"Athletics is an area that gives us a great conduit to teach life skills," said Upward Flag Football Director Blake Williamson. "From perseverance, to grit, to what it means to be unselfish, to sacrifice, and those type of things. Sports is a great opportunity, if done correctly, to build up those habits."

This year marks the fourth season of Upward Flag Football in Athens. The program is open to students entering first through sixth grade, with divisions for first and second graders, third and fourth graders, and fifth and sixth graders.

Registration is open until July 31, with three mandatory evaluation dates on Aug. 3, 8, and 10. These evaluations are not tryouts but an opportunity to assess skill levels and ensure balanced teams. Players only have to attend one evaluation practice.

"Everyone who signs up will play," Williamson said. "The evaluation process helps us create competitive yet fun environments for all participants."

Registration is $75, which includes a reversible jersey, flags, and a bag. Practices begin on Aug. 19, and games start the day after Labor Day. (We said $80 in the podcast, but $75 is the correct registration fee.)

Building Character Through Sports

Character development is another cornerstone of Upward Flag Football. Each practice includes a lesson on values like grace, faith, and forgiveness, with coaches leading prayers and discussions to reinforce these virtues. This approach creates a nurturing environment where kids can thrive without the pressure of high-stakes competition.

"They can see that hard work, being a great teammate, and encouraging others help them grow in their faith and are practical to apply in the areas that they love," Williamson said.

With its low stress and focus on building character and faith, the program offers a unique and valuable experience.

"We play hard, but we also have a lot of fun," Williamson said.

Don't miss this chance for your child to grow both on and off the field. Register for Athens Upward Flag Football by July 31 and be part of a program that’s all about building skills, character, and having a blast.
