A pair of recent arrests by the Sheriff's Office highlighted the ongoing battle against property crime in Henderson County.
During this week's podcast, Sheriff Botie Hillhouse described two cases where individuals were arrested for stealing property. The first saw two men arrested for breaking into an Athens storage facility and the second included an arrest in Gun Barrel City.
In both cases, property was returned to the rightful owner.
“Drug crimes grab the headlines,” Hillhouse said in a press release, “and rightly so. But I want people to know this Office has not forgotten about the every-day thieves who can so disrupt the lives of good, hard-working people who are their victims.”
Hillhouse said theft becomes more prevalent this time of year.
"There are people out there right now that are looking to steal things to either use them as Christmas gifts or to sell them," he said.
In our podcast, Hillhouse cautioned residents to make it harder on the criminals.
"You've got to make sure your stuff is locked up," he said. "If you see somebody wandering around, please call the Sheriff's Office."
Hillhouse also highlighted package deliveries.
"If you have a package coming, try to have somebody home to be able to pick up that package to bring it inside and lock it up," he said. "People are steadily doing mail theft and looking for packages to be dropped off."
