Botie Hillhouse was elected to his second term as Henderson County Sheriff Tuesday night. He ran unopposed.

During our podcast this week, I asked Hillhouse about what he learned during his first term, his accomplishments, and what's next.

Promises he made during his first campaign included:

  • Staying in state compliance in the jail.

  • Starting a mental health program in the jail.

  • Make illegal drugs a target.

"I feel like if you make (drugs) a big topic, you solve other crimes by arresting those individuals," he said, "and we've done that."

Hillhouse said the Sheriff's Office was able to accomplish his goals within the first year.

"Of course, that's because the staff here is outstanding and they got onboard with me and they never got off," he said, "and we continue to move forward."

Other topics discussed during the podcast included the K-9 program, the new communications system, and the Sheriff's extensive use of social media.

Looking forward, the Sheriff said he was working on a program to establish a deputy at the Henderson County Help Center to help with child abuse cases through the Child Advocacy Center. He also hopes to create a Crime Scene Investigations unit.
