The Breakdown (Quotes from County Judge Wade McKinney)
-- Importance of responding to the Census. (1:20)
The deadline for responding to the 2020 U.S. Census is Sept. 30. Judge McKinney discusses a myriad of reasons why the Census count is important to Henderson County.
“The Census drives so many things and it truly is very important for everyone that an accurate, complete count as can be made is actually reached.”
-- The last Census impacting Henderson County’s representation in the State House. (2:40)
During redistricting following the last Census, Henderson County was split into two Texas House districts.
“(This caused) less of a representation in one single district which, of course, causes what some say is some loss of influence.”
-- Redistricting at the county level. (6:40)
Redistricting isn’t something that just happens at the national and state level. Henderson County will go through its own redistricting process in 2021 based on the Census data.
“You have to keep all four precincts within 5 percent (population) of each other. To do that is quite a lot of shifting.”
-- Census data will have an impact when county nonprofits apply for grants. (13:23)
Census data is used in determining which federal and state grants are awarded. This is important not only to local governments, but to our county nonprofits.
“What we see the largest impact from this information is for those organizations that apply for those grants.”
-- Judge’s COVID update. (15:00)
Henderson County has hit a plateau with COVID hospitalizations.
“The trend on hospitalizations continues on this plateau, whereas when you contrast it with the state, the state has fallen.”
“We are in a much better place than we were many weeks ago.”
-- New information about the sensitivity of COVID tests. (18:38)
Some -- on both the left and the right -- are now asking whether the COVID-19 test is too sensitive. We breakdown this question.
“You can have the virus, but not a significant load.”
“I am very, very hopeful. I think 2021 is going to be a fantastic year.”
