The Athens Hornets will head out on the road for the final time this season as they travel to Kilgore to take on the 7-1, 4-0 Bulldogs.
Dave Campbell's Texas Football has Kilgore ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 4A Division I. https://www.texasfootball.com/rankings
"Kilgore is, just like last year, I would say the most talented team in the district," said Coach Zac Harrell.
Coach Harrell said the Bulldogs have a balanced offense that is as likely to run or throw the ball. Kilgore will also come out in a variety of formations, mostly lining up in a shotgun spread but also lining up under center occasionally.
"We need to stop the run," Coach Harrell said.
The Bulldogs are mainly an odd-man front on defense but, just like the offense, will present multiple looks to confuse the opposition. Kilgore's defensive line is their strength.
"They are very physical," said Coach Harrell. "Probably across the board, the biggest most physical defensive line we've played."
Keys to the Game
The Word of the Week is "abnormal," as in don't be average.
"There are a lot of average people in this world," said Coach Harrell. "So what do average people do? They blame their circumstances on other people. They don't take responsibility and don't find ways to fix it. They don't live in the present, they want to live in the past and talk about 'why are we here' instead of focusing on what we can do at this point to improve."
The coach's keys include:
Execute on third down.
Block multiple fronts and communicate.
Can't have miscues in special teams.
Play harder than we've played all year.
