The 4-3, 0-3 Athens Hornets will travel to Palestine Friday night to take on the 5-3, 3-1 Wildcats.
Athens is coming off a loss to Lindale last week. The short-handed Hornets looked like they were going to pull off the upset through most of three quarters, but fell short.
“This week was probably the most proud I’ve been of our team since I’ve been here,” Coach Zac Harrell said. “It is probably the best we’ve played, as a team, since I’ve been here.”
“We’ve proven that we can play with the best of the best in this district,” he said.
The Hornets are going to need that kind of effort Friday in Palestine. The Wildcats are a physical team built along both the offensive and defensive lines.
“They play old school, smash mouth football on both sides of the ball,” Harrell said.
Palestine is a Wing T offense and 3-4 defense.
“Their lines are their strength,” he said.
Harrell said the Word of the Week is grit.
“What grit means to me is sticking with the plan and believing and being tough when most people wouldn’t,” Harrell said. “Grit isn’t easy.”
Coach listed the 5 keys to the game:
Outmatch their physicality
Beat man coverage in the passing game
Wrap up and tackle well
Finish drives
Make a game-changing play in the kicking game
“Everybody in this district is really good,” said Harrell. “So every week it is going to take our best effort to have a chance to win.”
