Hornet Report: Athens Ready for Lindale

This interview was recorded Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Athens ISD Field House with Coach Zac Harrell and Michael V. Hannigan.

Despite playing well and giving themselves a chance to win in each of their matchups this season, the Athens Hornets (2-3, 0-1) have hit a tough stretch, falling short in their past three games.

“We’re really close,” said Coach Zac Harrell. “We just have to break through and get over that hump.”

The Hornets will look to get back into the win column this week when they host Lindale (3-2, 1-0) Friday night at Bruce Field. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Lindale beat Henderson last week 44-17.

Friday night figures to be physical.

“Number 1, what stands out, is that they’re always really well coached and they play extremely hard,” said Coach Harrell. “This year, the strength of their team is the offensive line.”

Coach Harrell said the Lindale offensive line is probably one of the best in Class 4A in the state. Not surprisingly, the Eagles run the ball about 75 percent of the time.

Defensively, Lindale will play a 3-3 stack with five in coverage behind them.

“They want to stop the run,” said Coach Harrell, “they are a physical team on defense.”

Word of the Week: Lunch pail mentality. “We have to wake up and come to work,” said Coach Harrell. “We have to do a better job on Monday and Tuesday of getting here and working with a purpose.”

– Be physical and tough, we must match their effort.

– Take care of the football.

– Create turnovers.

– Win in the second half.

– Win the field position battle on special teams.
