The Athens Hornets will be on the road Friday night and look to bounce back from a tough outing last week when they take on the Henderson Lions.
“Our kids continue to fight,” said Coach Zac Harrell, “they continue to play when the odds are against them.”
Both teams have struggled lately with Athens sporting a 2-4, 0-2 record while Henderson brings in a 0-5, 0-1 record.
But don’t let that winless record fool you, Henderson isn’t a bad team.
“Their record is a little misleading,” said Coach Harrell.
Coach Harrell said the Lions have three players with Division I scholarship offers including quarterback Jacobe Robinson, who was the difference in last year’s Hornets-Lions game.
“We can’t let that guy beat us, we’ve got to contain him,” Coach Harrell said.
Defensively, the Lions mostly play a 4-2 and mix coverages in the secondary.
“They’ll play Cover 2 and they’ll play man,” Coach Harrell said. “They’ll press and get in your face at times, so it presents some opportunities for us to throw the ball down the field.”
Both teams will be playing with a sense of urgency Friday night as they try and fight their way back into the district race.
“We feel like it is a game we definitely have a chance to win,” Coach Harrell said.
Keys to the Game
Word of the Week: Line in the sand. Coach Harrell talked to the Hornets this week about the Alamo and how Col. Travis drew a line in the sand for the men to decide whether they were going to fight or surrender. “I want the guys who are going to practice extremely hard, play extremely hard, and then keep being a great teammate,” Coach Harrell said.
– Contain the quarterback, don’t let him beat us.
– Don’t give up a big pass play to the running back up the seam.
– Beat press coverage.
– Keep being a great teammate.
