The 4-2, 0-2 Athens Hornets are scheduled to host 5-2, 3-0 Lindale Friday night at Bruce Field. Coach Zac Harrell said the Eagles are the best team the Hornets have faced so far this season.
The Breakdown (Quotes from Coach Harrell)
-- The Hornets have been devastated by injuries this season. (1:44)
Athens was off last week and the open date couldn’t have come at a better time. The Hornets have experienced a rash of injuries to their skill position players and defensive line.
“We needed (the week off) in a lot of ways. We needed it to heal some guys up. We’ve been hit pretty hard by the injury bug. Hopefully we’ll get a few guys back and recharge the battery.”
“It is unfortunate, it is unfortunate for these kids. Number one, my heart goes out to the kids that we lost due to injuries. We lost some seniors to season-ending injuries. I just feel deeply for those kids because they poured a lot into this program.”
-- Thoughts about Lindale. (9:00)
The Eagles come into Bruce Field undefeated in district play and Coach Harrell calls them the best team they’ve played so far this season.
“They are a complete team. They are good in all aspects of the game: offense, defense, and special teams.”
“They have an elite high school running back. Number 22, Jordan Jenkins, has been offered (a scholarship) by every college in the nation. … He’s big, physical, runs downhill. He’s the real deal.”
“(Defensively), I believe they’ve held everybody in district under 10 points.”
-- How does Athens attack Lindale? (15:13)
What can fans look for from Athens on Friday night?
“We think we can attack them in a variety of ways.”
-- Why do coaches move receivers around the formation? (11:42)
In this part of the podcast, we talk a little bit about the Xs and Os of football. This week, we discuss why coaches move wide receivers around the formation and line them up at different spots.
“You can try to create a match up, getting that guy on a different kind of player. Getting him matched up versus a linebacker or matched up against a different defensive back.”
“You move those guys around so you can put the ball in their hands in a variety of ways.”
