County Podcast: Heavy early voting; COVID numbers spike

Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney and I recorded this podcast in the Judge’s courtroom in the Courthouse Annex Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Here are 7 things I learned during the interview.

-- BIG TURNOUT: Twenty-five (25) percent of the county’s registered voters hit the polls during the first 6 days of early voting. “We have not seen anything like this before as far as the turnout,” McKinney said. (1:22)

-- SMOOTH PROCESS: Despite the huge turnout, things have gone very well at the three early voting locations. “You have to give credit to all of the volunteers and election staff. This thing has run so smoothly,” McKinney said. (3:18)

-- COVID CASE SPIKE: The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 in Henderson County is trending upward at a very fast pace. “When you look at the seven-day moving average that NET Health puts out, we’re as high as we’ve ever been. I believe we’re at an all-time high,” McKinney said. (9:35)

-- HOSPITALIZATIONS UP: Hospitalizations in our Trauma Service Area (TSA) are up again. Yesterday, we were at 233 hospitalizations due to COVID-19. Of the 22 TSAs in Texas, ours is 7th for hospitalization percentage.  (10:42)

-- MORE DEATHS: Henderson County has had 28 COVID-19 deaths, according to the state. (13:40)

-- STATS AVAILABLE: Judge McKinney has posted his COVID-19 spreadsheet on the Henderson County website. You can find that information here. (17:10)

-- MITIGATION IS THE SAME: Despite “Pandemic Fatigue,” the three steps for fighting COVID-19 are still social distance, wearing a mask when you can’t social distance, and wash your hands. (20:00)
