The 4-1, 0-1 Athens Hornets are scheduled to travel to Henderson Friday night to take on the 1-2, 0-0 Lions.

The Breakdown (Quotes from Coach Harrell)

-- The importance of the Hornets continuing to fight in the second half last week. (1:50)

Although they lost, the Hornets came out of halftime with a long scoring drive that included two 4th down conversions.

“I was extremely proud of our kids. I thought our kids believed we were going to win the entire time.”

“That is huge for a young team and huge for our program. To show that we can compete in this district.”

“Our word of the week this week is mental toughness. That’s one of our core values.”

-- Rash of injuries hits the Hornets. (6:00)

The Hornets are missing several players this week due to injuries.

“We’re banged up and that’s part of this game, that’s part of this sport.”

-- General observations about Henderson. (8:00)

The Henderson Lions are 1-2 and have missed games because of COVID-19 rules. They are a young team, but are perennially good.

“They’ve been one of the best programs in East Texas, if not the state of Texas, in this classification for the last 10 years. They’ve won a state championship and they’ve played deep in the playoffs almost every year.”

-- Henderson’s offense and defense. (8:52)

On both offense and defense, Henderson is going to use multiple formations and fronts.

“Their principle is they are going to do everything and we’re going to throw it all at you. It is hard to game plan them because you don’t know what they are going to throw at you.”

-- What does it mean when you say “multiple fronts?” (12:00)

Coach Harrell explains what it means when he says “multiple fronts” or odd and even fronts on defense.

-- Keys to the game against Henderson (16:43)

  • Play championship defense, get off the field on 3rd and long

  • Be great at communicating and blocking the multiple fronts

  • Make the routine play on both sides of the ball

  • Respond positively when things don’t go our way

  • Win all aspects of Special Teams
