There’s going to be a battle in Corsicana this Saturday afternoon.

The No. 14 TVCC Cardinals will be on the road to take on No. 6 Navarro. Although the Cardinals are lower in the national rankings than the Bulldogs, TVCC is in first place in the conference.

Not that the Cardinals are looking to rest on their laurels.

“You know, those standings, it matters at the end of the season,” said Coach Poteete. “That’s when it matters.”

Navarro will present a real test for the Cardinals this week.

“They’re good on offense, they’re good on defense,” said Coach Poteete. “It’s going to be a good ballgame. It’ll be fun to go out there and just compete versus them.”

While the Cardinals knew they had to stop Blinn’s rushing attack last week, this week Navarro is going to have a more varied offense.

“They are going to get in every formation possible. They are going to be very multiple,” Coach Poteete said.

The Bulldog offense is led by quarterback Dane Jentsch.

“He can beat you with his legs, he can beat you with his arm through the air,” said Coach Poteete. “He’s just a gritty, gutsy ballplayer.”

Jentsch plays behind what Coach Poteete called “probably the biggest offensive line we’ll face.”

“We do have a challenge in front of us to go out there and slow them down,” he said.

On the other side, the TVCC offense has been improving on a weekly basis and that is showing up in the stats. Quarterback Darion Peace is leading the conference in passing yards per game at 215 and Quincy Thompson is second in the conference rushing with 87 yards per game. Add in Trent Hudson, who is second in receiving with 59 yards per game.

This week, the Cardinals will see a defensive alignment they don’t often see: the 3-3 stack.

“Depending on formations, they’re still trying to keep that integrity of six people in the box, three defensive linemen and three linebackers,” Coach Poteete said. “It’s some different angles in our blocking schemes, so we’re trying to get all that mapped out and simplified.”

Whatever the Bulldogs put on the field, the Cardinals have shown a grittiness this year to respond.

“I don’t think it matters to these guys what’s gone on so far, it’s we’re playing the next play. They’ve continued to do that,” said Coach Poteete.
