The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) gave the green light to fall sports last week.

Friday’s announcement read, “At this time, the NJCAA will proceed with fall championship sports beginning practice and competition as planned.”

Which means TVCC Cardinal football practice is expected to start Aug. 1.

“We’re looking forward to just getting guys back,” said Coach Sherard Poteete. “Just getting my kids back on campus.” (You can listen to the full interview above.)

Poteete said everyone is working hard to be ready for football during the pandemic.

“We are having meetings and meetings and meetings upon that right now, to get a plan so we’re all on the same page and be a unified front,” he said.

Pandemic aside, the Cardinals are going to face some early challenges thanks to the schedule. TVCC will be on the road for its first four games, including Week 1 in Kansas and Week 2 in Oklahoma.

“We’re not just going across the Kansas line, we’re going to Dodge City,” Poteete said. “And we’re not just going across the Oklahoma line, we’re going all the way up to the northeast corner of it.”

The good news is the Cardinals will finish the season with 4 out 5 games at Bruce Field.

“We have to survive the first few games of the season,” Poteete said. “Then things kind of even out for us the rest of the way.”

The Cardinals were picked to finish third in the SWJCFC by Dave Campbell Texas Football.

“Every year is an adventure, every year is different,” said Poteete. “If you can come out of our league making the playoffs, you’re putting yourselves with a chance to play in a bowl game.”
