In this episode, Michael talks with Coach Harrell after the Hornets' decisive 35-9 homecoming victory over Palestine. The two discuss the team's dominant performance and look ahead to this week’s road game against Jacksonville.
Recap of Last Week’s Win
Coach Harrell talks about the homecoming blowout at Bruce Field, where Athens controlled all phases of the game, improving their record to 2-1. Despite being down a few key players, the Hornets stepped up and played gritty, tough football against a talented Palestine team.
The Hornets took control early, scoring 21 points in the first quarter with help from interceptions by seniors Dewayne Minifee and AJ White. Palestine managed to score once in the second quarter but was otherwise stifled by Athens' defense, which pressured Palestine's quarterback throughout the game.
Coach Harrell highlighted the team's ability to execute a smart game plan in the second half, focusing on burning the clock to protect a banged-up roster.
Coach Harrell also praised kicker Agustin Rodriguez, who made a highlight-reel tackle on kickoff coverage. The special teams unit continues to show improvement each week, with Rodriguez's play standing out.
Preview of the Jacksonville Game
The Hornets will travel to the historic Tomato Bowl to take on Jacksonville (1-2) this Friday. Coach Harrell discusses the significance of this rivalry game, noting the changes in Jacksonville's offensive scheme, which now heavily favors the run. Stopping the run will be Athens' top priority, as Jacksonville's offense is built around a physical ground game with multiple tight ends.
Coach Harrell also highlights the adjustments Athens will need to make to handle Jacksonville’s new defensive scheme, which features a switch to an even front with multiple coverages in the secondary.
Keys to Victory
Word of the Week: Laser Focus – Eliminate distractions and stay focused on improving each day.
Stop the Run – Jacksonville’s offense is run-heavy, and the Hornets must make stopping the run their top priority.
Win the Perimeter Battles – Jacksonville's defense funnels plays to the outside, so Athens' perimeter blocking will be crucial.
Big Plays in Special Teams – Coach Harrell wants to see a big return in the kicking or punt return game to swing momentum.
Be a Better Teammate – Players are encouraged to find ways to support their teammates and elevate each other's play.
Football 101: Understanding Cover 3
To wrap up the podcast, Coach Harrell breaks down the concept of “Cover 3,” explaining how defensive schemes work and how quarterbacks like David Richardson read the defense before and after the snap.
