Football season is fast approaching and the Athens Hornets are getting ready for their season opener against Brownsboro scheduled for Friday, Aug. 28.

The Hornets will be in Canton this Thursday, Aug. 20, for their only scrimmage of the year. The freshman and JV teams will be on the field at 5 p.m., with the varsity taking the field at 6:30 p.m. Times are estimated.

Athens Coach Zac Harrell said spectators will be allowed at the scrimmage at 50 percent capacity, although he doesn’t know the exact process that will be used in Canton.

“I am betting they will have a counter system at the gate,” he said, “and let the first 50 percent in.”

The freshman and JV will be on opposite ends of the field with the teams getting 10 offensive plays before switching.

“They’ll get a ton of plays in that hour,” Harrell said.

The schedule for the varsity scrimmage includes:

  • 12 plays Canton 1st offense vs Athens 1st defense

  • 12 plays Athens 1st offense vs Canton 1st defense

  • 10 plays Canton 2nd offense vs Athens 2nd defense

  • 10 plays Athens 2nd offense vs Canton 2nd defense

That series will repeat again and then the two teams will play a live, 10-minute period.

Listen to the podcast for more from Coach Harrell about the meaning of SWARM, what jobs are still open, and getting to hit in practice.
