Less than two weeks remain before Athens ISD starts a new school year. I spoke with AISD Superintendent Dr. Janie Sims via Zoom Tuesday about how things will look as students return.
The biggest thing for parents to know is that the first three weeks will be virtual, with parents having the option to keep their students in online learning after that.
“Hopefully it will all change for the better and by the end of the school year we’re all back together and normal, but just can’t see down the road that far right now,” said Dr. Sims, “so we want to give parents as many opportunities to make a choice as possible.”
Dr. Sims also urged parents to make sure their students are registered for school.
“It is just as if you are walking in the door,” she said. “It’s school and school starts August 3.”
Dr. Sims said the district will be publishing a parent handbook this week listing the particular guidelines for the school year.
Topics we discussed during the interview Tuesday included:
Remote learning for the first three weeks
Taking temperatures before getting on the bus or entering school
Masks and social distancing in school
Daily sanitizing being done throughout the district
Daily handwashing by the students
Visitor restrictions
Remote learning time requirements
The need to register
