This week, Michael talks with TVCC Head Football Coach Sherard Poteete about the big win over Air Force Prep and the upcoming game against Blinn College at Bruce Field.
Big Win Against Air Force Prep
Coach Poteete talked about how good it felt to get a big win after a tough start to the season. "It's good to get that bad taste out of your mouth," he said. The Cardinals beat Air Force Prep 48-0, playing well on both offense and defense. The defense held Air Force Prep to less than 90 total yards, and the offense had more than 500 yards. Coach Poteete praised the defense for stopping Air Force Prep's option offense, which is tough to prepare for in a short week.
Crazy Weekend in the Conference
It was a wild weekend in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC). Cisco upset Kilgore, who was ranked No. 5 in the country, and Blinn made a huge comeback to beat Navarro, 44-43. "In this conference, you better play until the last whistle," Coach Poteete said, talking about how competitive every game can be.
Blinn is Next
TVCC (2-2) is back in conference play this Saturday against Blinn College (2-1). Blinn just won a high-scoring game over Navarro thanks to their quarterback, Rylan Wooten, who was named NJCAA National Player of the Week. "He's elusive—he can throw it, he can run it a little bit," Coach Poteete said. The Cardinals' defense, which is ranked second in the nation with 24 sacks, will have to be ready to keep Blinn’s quarterback under control.
Keys to Winning
The Cardinals need to stop Blinn from making big plays. The defense, which has been great at getting to the quarterback, has to keep Blinn's quarterback from making scrambling. On offense, the team wants to keep up their explosive plays and also put together long drives. "We've got everything still in front of us," Coach Poteete said. He reminded everyone that the Cardinals need to take it one game at a time.
