Cardinals ready for first game of the season

The wait is over. It’s game week for the Trinity Valley Cardinals.

Coach Sherard Poteete’s team will board the bus early Saturday morning and head north to Kansas for an 11 a.m. kickoff against Independence Community College. It’s the first test of the 2025 season and the start of what Poteete believes can be a special year.

The Cardinals are coming off last week’s scrimmage at Louisiana Christian, and now the focus turns to who will take the field. About 65 players will make the trip, including four quarterbacks, with sophomore Kaden Brown set to start. Returner Jadyn Collins will also see action, while transfers and freshmen fill out the depth chart.

The opener brings unique challenges. Independence is not a regular opponent, and new coordinators mean there is little reliable film to study. For many Cardinals, it will also be their first college football game — and maybe their first road trip out of Texas.

Poteete said much of this week has been about preparation off the field as much as on it. “Half our guys, this is their first college football game ever,” he said. “We’re just trying to over communicate. Here’s the itinerary, here’s what to expect, so nothing comes as a shock. Then when that first whistle blows, it’s time to go play ball.”

Fans who can’t make the trip can still watch the action here. https://www.kjcccsports.net/iccpirates/

The Cardinals will have an open week after Independence before a tough stretch of games begins in September.
