In this week’s Cardinal Podcast, Michael Hannigan sat down with Head Coach Sherard Poteete to talk about Saturday’s match-up against Monroe College of New York. The Mustangs travel south for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Wildcat Stadium in Palestine.
Playing in Palestine
For the first time, TVCC will host a home game on its Palestine campus. Coach Poteete said it’s a way to bring another part of TVCC into the football experience.
“Obviously that campus does a lot for Trinity Valley. Trinity Valley does a lot for that campus,” Coach Poteete said. “So, hey, let’s go have a football game and kind of include another campus and let’s see what we can do for the City of Palestine.”
Scouting Monroe
The Mustangs opened their season with a 28-6 win over Sussex, leaning on a strong defense and short fields. Coach Poteete said their offense didn’t pile up yards, but their defense created opportunities.
“They’ve been a 10-0, 11-0 team in recent years and ranked really high in the polls,” Poteete said. “Coach Pulley has done a really good job there.”
One player who stood out on film is linebacker/defensive end Tavorian Copeland.
“He’s long and rangy, plays really, really hard, and was all over the field,” Coach Poteete said.
He also said that Monroe rotates quarterbacks and runs a diverse offense, with looks ranging from four-wide sets to power formations under center, something unusual in today’s game.
Cardinals’ Outlook
TVCC comes in 1-0 after beating Independence and had an open week to regroup. The break allowed injured safeties to return, and Coach Poteete said he is eager to see the defense at full strength.
“We’ve talked about growth from week one to week two,” he said. “We actually had a little bye week in there to work on some of those things and get a couple guys back. So I’m excited about that.”
Quarterback Kaden Brown will start again, with Jadyn Collins expected to see time as well.
