It was a somber interview with Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse this week as we talked about a deputy getting shot last week, the passing of K-9 Max, and an unsolved murder.
We started off with the sheriff adding some more details to last week's case in which Jack Cody Raburn, 40, was arrested for shooting a deputy in the leg early on March 4.
The deputy was shot once in the foot and once in the leg. He was treated and released from a hospital in Tyler and is currently at home and doing well, according to Hillhouse.
Investigation into Raburn turned up drugs, firearms, and stolen property.
Since the initial arrest, several charges have been added on Raburn, including Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. Other charges included Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, Evading Arrest, Possession of Marijuana over 4 ounces under 5 pounds, Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Possession of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine) greater than 200 grams less than 400 grams, Theft of Property greater than $2,500 less than $30,000, and multiple counts of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.
K-9 Max, who was trained at K9 Global Training Academy, died Friday evening from an illness. Doctors at both Morton's Animal Clinic and the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital did everything the could for Max, but were unable to save him.
In a Facebook post Friday, Hillhouse wrote, "We are heartbroken but we know he is not suffering anymore. Max was one of the best we have ever seen. He will be missed by all of us and especially by Deputy Meagan Hogan. He has been her right hand and served the citizens of Henderson County at a top notch level."
We finished up the podcast by discussing the unsolved murder of Rickey Herriage, which happened 34 years ago this month. Hillhouse said the Sheriff's Office continues to work on this cold case.
If you have any information in reference to this unsolved murder please call 903-675-5128 or stay anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-545-TIPS.
