Tuesday, Henderson County Commissioners Court approved a $1.84 million adjustment to its contract with L3Harris for the new digital communications system. You can listen to Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney and I discuss the move above.
The adjustment breaks down into two areas. The system was originally designed to use four towers.
"Two of those towers were owned by entities that the county works with and at no charge," said Judge Wade McKinney, "but the other two towers were lease towers. That was going to add an additional $100,000 a year in lease."
Considering the previous county communications system lasted more than 40 years, those leases would add up.
"It became much more cost effective to own our own towers," McKinney said.
That change cost about $841,000.
The other change cost about $1 million and added a fifth tower to the system, ensuring redundancy and that the loss of a single tower wouldn't result in reduced coverage.
"If we would have lost that western tower, we would have lost half the county's communication," McKinney said.
The additions increased the price tag of the new system to $6.3 million, however the county also received a $500,000 grant to help pay for the fifth tower.
You can watch Commissioners Court address this issue in the video below. The discussion starts at the 41:37 mark.
