In this episode, Michael sat down with Coach Harrell to talk about the Hornets' upcoming district opener against the Brownsboro Bears after an open week.
Non-District Recap
Coach Harrell discussed the Hornets' non-district success, finishing 4-1, and the growth of the team each week. He highlighted how Athens faced tough competition, including a dominant victory over Waco Connally, a team that had been averaging 42.5 points per game before being held to just 14 points by the Hornet defense. Harrell praised the defense’s control over the last three games, giving special recognition to Defensive Coordinator Coach Chayse Rives.
Special teams also received high marks for their play against Connally, especially after a kickoff return for a touchdown. Coach Harrell emphasized that while Julious Brewer made the big play, it was the effort of the 10 other players that made the return possible.
District Play Begins
As the Hornets prepare for district play, Coach Harrell reminded the team that records don't matter anymore—everyone starts at 0-0. Athens is set to face the 0-5 Brownsboro Bears Friday night at Bruce Field. Harrell stressed the importance of not overlooking Brownsboro, as the Bears always bring their best effort in this rivalry matchup.
The Bears' offense has been more versatile this season, utilizing both spread formations and heavier sets, sometimes even getting under center to run the ball. Their quarterback, who started as a sophomore last year, is capable of making throws and poses a threat through the air. The Bears also feature standout athletes, including a defensive lineman who occasionally plays running back, and a Division I recruit at cornerback who is expected to contribute on offense as well.
Keys to Victory
Word of the Week: It's a New Season – Everybody is 0-0 at this point, it's a brand new season.
Start Strong – Coach Harrell emphasized the need for a fast start in the first quarter to set the tone.
Special Teams Impact – Coach Harrell is looking for another game-changing special teams play.
Maintain Composure – In a rivalry game with high emotions, the Hornets need to stay disciplined and not get caught up in the moment.
Efficiency in the Passing Game – Coach Harrell challenged the offense to complete over 70 percent of their passes, which requires everyone from the quarterback to the offensive line to execute.
Respect All, Fear None – The Hornets aim to respect their opponent but step onto the field with confidence and focus on their own game.
