PROPOSED POLICE STATION
The Athens City Council heard from its architect Monday night and saw preliminary drawings for the proposed police station.
The proposed station was described in a City Facebook Post:
The nearly 17,000-square-foot facility would be more than twice the size of the current police station and serve the department's needs for many years.
Some of the highlights of the proposed plan include computer-controlled evidence lockers, negative pressure evidence rooms for drugs and weapons, and a dispatch area designed for 21st-century digital equipment. In addition, there will be condensed shelving for records, dedicated interview rooms, and a training area that can double as an Emergency Operations Center.
The City of Athens will hold a $5.5 million bond election on Tuesday, Nov. 2, for the purpose of building a police station. The project will not require a tax rate increase.
Early voting will run from Monday, Oct. 18, to Friday, Oct. 29.
The last day to register to vote in this election is Monday, Oct. 4.

It's time to sign up for the Turkey Trot!
Hope Springs Water will host its annual Turkey Trot at the Cain Center 8 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 25.
"The profits from this year's race will be used to drill wells in Africa and Central America. The average woman in rural Africa walks 6K every day to haul 40 pounds of water. We invite you to freely run a 5K with us on their behalf. What better way to show gratitude for clean water than by giving it to others? Run for water on Thanksgiving Day in Athens!"
