Lady Cards upset No. 4-ranked Three Rivers
The 18th-ranked Lady Cardinals pulled off a dramatic 60-58 upset over No. 4 Three Rivers, rallying from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter during Saturday's Budke/Serna Thanksgiving Classic at Cardinal Gym. Nylia Wilkins sealed the win with a clutch floater in the lane with just four seconds remaining, giving the Lady Cardinals their fifth consecutive victory and a 7-2 season record. Cardinals are No. 1
The TVCC Cardinals have claimed the No. 1 spot in the NJCAA national rankings after an undefeated 8-0 start under first-year head coach Greg Heiar. The Cardinals dominated the Pensacola Thanksgiving Classic, defeating three nationally-ranked teams—No. 15 Tallahassee, No. 20 Northwest Florida State, and No. 17 Chipola. This marks their first No. 1 ranking since February 2016. The Cardinals begin Region XIV play Wednesday against Kilgore and return to Cardinal Gym Saturday against Tyler. Holiday Lights at the East Texas Arboretum
Experience the magic of the holiday season at the East Texas Arboretum's Holiday Lights, a spectacular evening walk through stunning light displays in the main garden loop. Open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings in December, this event features lighted archways, festive gazebos, carolers, hot cocoa, whimsical holiday vignettes, and photos with Santa courtesy of Atmos Energy. Buddy the Elf hits the HCPAC Mainstage
Get ready for holiday magic at the Henderson County Performing Arts Center as Buddy the Elf takes the stage in Elf: The Musical! In collaboration with Stage Notes Academy of Performing Arts, this heartwarming Christmas classic will run from Dec. 5–21. Directed by Kara Davis and Shaydi Clary, with choreography by Karen Holmes, the production features a cast of nearly 50 and promises to bring joy, laughter, and Christmas cheer. Breaking Chains Angel Tree
Breaking Chains - Henderson County Coalition Against Family Violence is encouraging the community to spread holiday cheer by supporting its Angel Tree program. The Angel Tree is located at Cotton Patch Café, 1413 State Highway 31 W. in Athens. Community members can select an angel from the tree and provide gift cards to support individuals and families affected by family violence. All gifts should be delivered to the Ship Shop, 401 S. Wesley Hill: From TVCC to Top Trial Lawyer and Mediator
Wesley Hill’s rise from a first-generation college graduate at Trinity Valley Community College to one of Texas' most respected lawyers is a testament to the transformative power of education and determination. A TVCC scholarship recipient, Hill credits the college with providing the foundation for his remarkable legal career, which includes trying more than 30 civil cases and earning recognition as a Texas Super Lawyer. AHS Theater to Stage 'Puffs'
Discover the untold story of the other house! Athens Creates Theater (ACT) at Athens High School presents Puffs: Two-Act Edition for Young Wizards, a hilarious and heartfelt comedy by Matt Cox. Performances are set for Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. under the direction of Heather Berryhill. Cardinal Defense Sizzles in Fast Start
The undefeated TVCC Cardinals have soared to the No. 1 national ranking with a 9-0 record, but the stats only scratch the surface of their dominance. In four games, the Cardinals have held opponents to fewer than 20 points in a half—a testament to their relentless full-court man-to-man defense. Head Coach Greg Heiar credits the team's depth, hard work, and unity for their success, saying, “Our strength is in our numbers.” Learn more here.
AISD Hall of Fame to induct standout players, teams
Celebrate the rich history of Athens ISD athletics at the Athletic Hall of Fame induction dinner on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Athens Country Club. This year’s honorees include standout athletes Blake Armstrong and Morgan Mayse, the record-breaking 2010 Hornets football team, and the legendary 1929 and 1930 basketball teams.
