SHREVEPORT -- Trinity Valley Community College flew past the Southern Shreveport Jags Saturday night, 60-18, on its way to a 3-0 record.
The first score foreshadowed the type of night it would be. On their second play from scrimmage, the Jags hit on a halfback pass for a 63-yard touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked by Joedrick Lewis and returned by Rashad Onezime for a 6-2 score.
That sequence was followed by three straight touchdown drives by the Cardinals.
And so it went. Occasionally the Jags would hit on a big play, but the talented Cardinals would quickly reestablish control -- with a little craziness thrown in for good measure.
The Cardinals were led by Cam Camper, who caught nine passes for 204 yards and a touchdown from quarterbacks Bronson McClelland and Jordan Davis. The rushing attack was shared among TVCC's cadre of backs with Cordrick Dunn (77) and Cameron Collier (73) getting the bulk of the yardage.
TVCC will return to the familiar comforts of Bruce Field next Saturday to take on the Tyler Junior College Apaches on Family Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
DID YOU NOTICE
-- The Cardinals got fumble recoveries from Evan Hicks, Abrion Boudreaux, Kamaurja Kenney, and Zayteak McGhee.
-- This is the third straight week I’ve written about a big play from CB Rashad Onezime and the second time he’s found the endzone.
-- The Jags gained 271 yards on the night, but 206 of them came on four plays. Passes of 63, 71, and 47 yards and a run of 25 yards. The rest of the game, Southern Shreveport gained just 65 yards.
-- Great play by Zayteak McGhee on special teams. He raced downfield on a punt and dived into the endzone to knock the ball back to be downed at the Jags 1 yard line.
-- The big hit Tristian Fletcher laid on Jags running back Tamauge Sloan in the first quarter brought a big owwww from the press box.
-- The referees had some struggles in the administration of the game. For instance, according to my stats, the chains moved to give the Cardinals a first down after they gained 8 yards on the first drive. And then again after they gained 9 yards. And then again after they gained 8 yards. The referees and the chain crew seemed to get it figured out after that, but it set a theme for the evening.
-- I also THINK I saw a 26-yard penalty stepped off against the Cardinals. I'm still not sure what that was about.
