Freshman Jake Gaster drilled a 54-yard field goal as time expired to give TVCC a 34-31 win over defending SWJCFC champion Cisco Saturday.
The Cardinals almost denied themselves the chance for Gaster's heroics. TVCC miscues throughout the game included ill-timed penalties, four turnovers, and allowing two blocked punts. Those mistakes led to easy points for Cisco and put the Cardinals behind, 31-24, and gave the Wranglers the ball with 5:51 left in the game.
But from that point on, TVCC looked like a team that could be in the national championship conversation.
First, the Cardinal defense held Cisco to a three-and-out, forcing the Wranglers to punt the ball to the TVCC 30.
With 4:12 left, the Cardinals then drove 70 yards in 10 plays with QB Bronson McClelland finishing the drive on a 3-yard run. TVCC had tied the score, but there was just 1:09 left in regulation.
Cisco took over on the following drive on its own 26 and the Cardinals held them to another three-and-out. It was the 8th three-and-out forced by TVCC during the game.
More importantly, Cicsco's drive took just :22 seconds off the clock. After the punt, TVCC had the ball on their own 36 with :42 left in regulation and one timeout.
McClelland and the Cardinals operated the two-minute offense to perfection, hitting quick passes to the sideline to conserve the clock. TVCC moved from their 36 to the Cisco 36 leaving :05 seconds for Gaster.
The game-winner was Gaster's second field goal of the game.
The No. 4-ranked Cardinals are now 5-0, 3-0 on the season. They will be off next week and return to the field in Brenham to take on Blinn Saturday, Oct. 16.

DID YOU NOTICE
-- The Cardinals leaned on their tight ends against the Wranglers. TVCC had one or two tight ends on the field for most plays Saturday. It's not a surprise then that the Cardinal rushing attack was so good with TVCC racking up 238 yards on the ground.
-- TVCC was led by Cordrick Dunn with 113 yards on 21 carries. Cameron Collier added 83 yards on 17 carries.
-- Kordell David had a huge day for the Cardinals, catching seven passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.
-- TVCC fumbled the play before their first touchdown but was saved from disaster by Cameron Collier. That allowed the 72-yard strike from Bronson McClelland to Kordell David on the next play.
-- TVCC's one takeaway happened in the second quarter when Zion Hester picked off Cisco QB Mehki Hagens.
-- Cisco's offense had 11 plays of negative yardage plus four plays of 0 yards. That's 37 percent of all the Cisco plays I recorded on my stat sheet.
