Turnovers Hurt Hornets in Loss to Henderson, 48-34
HENDERSON -- The Athens Hornets dug a hole they couldn't get out of with three second quarter turnovers Friday night on their way to a 48-34 loss to the Henderson Lions.
The loss drops the Hornets to 2-5, 0-3 on the year.
The Hornets started hot, scoring on their first two possessions of the game with a pair of 1-yard runs, first by Ty Arroyo and then by Jaxson Stiles. In between, Athens forced a Henderson fumble that was recovered by Logan Schwering.
But Henderson took advantage of three second quarter interceptions by the Hornets to score 14 points in 2:06 and build a 27-13 halftime lead.
That stretch and those 14 points were the difference in the game.
The Hornets tried to rebound, scoring on the first possession of the second half when Ty Arroyo hit Eli Perkins for a 52-yard touchdown. Athens then converted an onside kick when D'Alessandro Soto jumped on the loose ball.
But that drive ended in a fourth Hornet interception, this one at the goal line.
Henderson scored on the next drive to push the score back to 14 and the two teams seesawed for the rest of the game.
The Hornets were led on the ground by Zay Hull, who turned in a workhorse effort. Hull ran for 205 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.
Ty Arroyo added 141 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
The Hornets will be off next week before hosting Kilgore at Bruce Field on Oct. 21.
