AISD schedules live stream to talk about COVID-19
The Athens City Council canvassed the vote from the recent election Monday night and administered the oath of office to (pictured below, from left) Robert Gross, Sytonia Freeman, and Aaron Smith. Smith and Gross are returning to the council for second terms, while Freeman begins her first term.
Also Monday, the council elected Councilwoman Toni Garrard Clay as Mayor Pro Tem.
What's Happening - Quick hits from the group
Athens ISD will be streaming a live discussion of its COVID-19 protocols on Facebook at noon Wednesday, Nov. 18. The discussion will include Superintendent Dr. Janie Sims, Assistant Superintendent Ginger Morrison, Dr. James Qualls, and AISD Registered Nurse Vanessa Bledsoe. Topics will include how contact tracing within AISD is executed, the distric commitment to following CDC guidelines, the effectiveness of that commitment in reducing viral transmission, holiday safety practices, and how the community at large is doing. Malakoff High School's Tucker Aaron is the Chris Shivers MBR Reserve World Champion. According to a post by Lana Aaron, "Overall he won 4 buckles and 2 big checks, 4 checks total this week/weekend for winning Round 2 and Average in the Last Chance Qualifier and MBR World Reserve Champion & Average winner here at AT&T Stadium!! He was the only one to cover all 6 bulls! He heads to Jr NFR in a couple of weeks and then onto IMBA World Finals!" Congratulations, Tucker!
Athens FFA members competed at the Sandyland District Leadership Development events last week. Anna Meyer, Alexis Woods, Sarah Fizer, Mia Montalvo took second out of 15 in the Greenhand Quiz to advance to advance to area. You can see the post listing all the students here.
The TVCC Rodeo Team competed at SHSU this past weekend. Sophomore Cameron Rogers from Malakoff won the long go in Bull Riding and second in the average. Sophomores Cutter Carpenter from Athens and Devon Johnson from Red Oak placed 5th in the long go and 6th in the short go and 5th in the average in Team Roping. Caleb Bomer and Reed Allen of Athens High School won first place in the THSBA Central Division fishing tournament on Lake Fork Saturday with a total weight of 8.85 pounds. They each won a $1,000 scholarship and a Lew’s Reel. See their photo here.


COVID-19 Update
COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Trauma Service Area (TSA) that includes Henderson County was at 328 Monday, according to data aggregated by the county. This is down from an all-time high of 341 on Saturday.
Currently, 11.89 percent of the hospital beds in our TSA are occupied by COVID-19 patients.
The state is divided into 22 TSA regions. Henderson County is designated TSA-G and includes the Tyler/Longview area. There are approximately 970,000 people living in the area.

Looking Ahead
I am set up to cover my first basketball game of the year and it looks like a good one! The No. 5-ranked ACPA Lady Storm will be hosting No. 8 Waxahachie Prep Tuesday night. Not often I get to cover a game involving Top 10 teams this early in the season.
