State Rep. Keith Bell files civics education bills
(From Press Releases)
On March 8, State Rep. Keith Bell filed House Bill 3211 to amend the Texas education requirements to expand the civics curriculum for grades K 12. HB 3211 would ensure that every student in Texas public schools receives a comprehensive education on the importance of democracy, America's founding principles, and being an engaged and informed citizen of Texas and the United States.
"Our students deserve to have the opportunity to develop values that encourage participation, pride, and patriotism in American ideals and institutions," Bell said. "These shared American values are what hold our communities together and create citizens that will make a positive difference in our state and country."
Bell filed a similar bill in February, calling for school districts to offer an elective course on America's founding principles, including the Constitution, the Federalist Papers, the Declaration of Independence and the writings of the Founding Fathers.
"Now, more than ever, a fundamental understanding of the founding principles of our nation is of the utmost importance," Bell said when he filed HB 1776. "As President Reagan once said, 'Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction.' Civics education is essential to the survival of our democracy."
