DJ Warren has spent years helping connect farmers, bakers, and makers to local families through the Athens Farmers Market. Now she’s taking that mission one step further.
Warren is launching a new grocery store — Rooted: ETX Local Goods + Market — with a soft opening planned for Sept. 4 in Murchison. The store will carry local produce, meat, dairy, and artisan goods, alongside select organic and specialty items.
“This is just an extension of what I’ve already been doing,” Warren said Saturday morning at the Farmers Market. “We’re hyperlocal. We want to connect people to the farmers and makers right here in our community.”
Warren, who manages the Athens Farmers Market and also runs the Athens Local REKO online market, said the store will feature curated items from the region’s farmers markets and small-batch producers. Shoppers can expect to find everything from Texas milk and butter to handmade teas, breads, and soaps.
But Rooted won’t just carry local products. It’s also designed to increase food access more broadly.
“You’ll still see produce from outside the area when we can’t get it local, and we’ll try to source organic when possible,” Warren said. “It’ll have some of the feel of a health food store, but with more of a community vibe.”
The space has been in the works for years. Warren secured the building back in February, but the idea had been taking shape long before that.
“When I said yes to the space, a local businessman called and told me, ‘It’s time to do your store.’ I told him, ‘I already am,’” she said, laughing.
“This is about building something together; something rooted in community and shared success,” Warren said.
