Public Library Fund announces land purchase for new library
By Michael V. Hannigan
The annual Books in Bloom event was put on hold for the past two years due to COVID, but it came back with a splash last week with an important announcement.
"I am excited to announce that the Public Library Fund (PLF) recently purchased land on South Palestine Street adjacent to the Cain Center," said PLF President Beth Faulk. "Our vision is to raise funds to build a new facility and to create a new cultural hub for Henderson County and its citizens."
The library has been in the same building for 45 years and Mrs. Faulk said it has outgrown the space.
"Although our current location is excellent," she said, "it thwarts our growth. Our building is aging, and I do not mean like fine wine."
Mrs. Faulk said the old building suffers from mold and water damage and is not ADA compliant.
"Our current building cannot feasibly be modified to be brought up to modern standards to provide adequate library services," she said. "The current capacity has not kept pace with the rapid growth. In fact, it is inadequate to truly serve the county."
The PLF has started the planning phase, Mrs. Faulk said, and members expect to gather community input on the new facility.
"With a new building, our library staff will be able to expand our collection, we will have ample operational space, safe and sufficient parking for all patrons, dedicated space to conduct our ever-growing children's programs so that we no longer have to meet off-site, space for community groups to meet, 21st-century connectivity, outdoor space for play and programs," she said. "Well, you see where I am headed. The sky is the limit and we are aiming high!"
Those who wish to make a donation for the new library can write a check to the Public Library Fund and drop it off at the library or mail it to 121 S. Prairieville Street, Athens, TX 75751.
