Recent rains have at least delayed the need for a burn ban, Fire Marshal Shane Renberg told Commissioners Court Tuesday morning.
Renberg said Sunday night’s rain prompted a 105-point drop in the county’s average Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI).
“It is one of the biggest drops in a day’s time I have seen in a long time,” he said.
The county’s KBDI average as of Tuesday’s meeting was 503, Renberg said, well below the 575 that normally triggers a burn ban.
However, the Fire Marshal added that the county had seen more than 20 grass fires in recent weeks and asked Commissioners to keep the burn ban on the agenda to monitor the situation.
“If it stays dry and we don’t get any more rain, and the temps remain up there, in a week’s time we could be back up there where we have to discuss (a burn ban),” he said.
