New solar facility announced for Henderson County
200 megawatt plant planned just outside Eustace
Henderson County is getting a solar power facility.
The announcement came Tuesday from Vistra, the parent company of Luminant. The Henderson County facility will be one of seven new sites built by the company and is part of a $1 billion investment it is making in clean power in Texas.
Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney welcomed the news.
"This is fantastic. This is a great shot in the arm for our community as a whole," he said. "In a year where everything has gone wrong, this is something that's gone right."
McKinney said the facility will be built at the 12,000-acre Forest Grove location about 5 miles south of Eustace. The land was originally scheduled to be used for a lignite plant that was never built.
Vistra expects to invest $200 million in the Forest Grove Solar Facility. Plans call for construction to take place in the summer and fall of 2021 and require an estimated 1,000 construction jobs.
McKinney said the facility is expected online sometime in 2022. The facility will generate about 200 megwatts.
"Vistra is paving its way for a sustainable future – economically and environmentally – and we’ve been focused on transitioning our generation portfolio for the benefit of the environment, our customers, our communities, our people, and our shareholders," said Curt Morgan, president and CEO of Vistra.
Also Tuesday, Vistra announced it would be retiring the Trinidad Power Plant in 2021. According to a press release, the plant is being closed for economic reasons. You can read more about that here.
