Malakoff throttles Maypearl in playoff shutout
Tigers to face Pottsboro in second round
HEWITT -- Malakoff could have left its offense at home.
The Tiger defense dominated Friday night's bi-district matchup with Maypearl and even outscored the Panthers, 7-0.
Of course, the Malakoff offense did its part as well, racking up well over 500 yards on the way to a 59-0 Tiger blowout.
But it was the defense that set the tone Friday, holdingĀ Maypearl to just 64 yards and four first downs for the game. The Panthers punted 10 times.
Malakoff's defense forced three takeaways including fumble recoveries by Austin Massingill and DK Rose, and an interception by Chauncey Hogg that the sophomore returned 34 yards for a touchdown.
"DK really brings the hat and brings a lot of energy out there and the other guys feed off him," said Malakoff Coach Jamie Driskell.
The Panthers did not generate a single first down in the second half.
"Maypearl threw the ball pretty well throughout the year, so we're proud of our secondary and proud of our pass rush," Coach Driskell said.
The Malakoff offense was led by senior Duce Hart who had 195 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. With the game well in hand, Hart only touched the ball twice in the second half before getting rested for next week.
"Proud of him, proud of the kids," said Coach Driskell.
DK Rose added 63 yards from scrimmage both rushing and receiving.
Quarterback Judson Driskell completed passes to five different receivers for 162 yards and a touchdown.
Malakoff will face Pottsboro in the second round of the playoffs. The Cardinals beat Tatum Friday night, 56-55.
