Mabank rallies in second half to beat Athens, 24-17
MABANK — A second half comeback by the Mabank Panthers erased a double-digit Athens lead, with the Hornets falling in the final game of the season, 24-17.
The loss drops Athens to 4-6, 0-6 on the season, while Mabank improved to 4-6, 1-5.
The Panthers took the lead for the first time with just :05 seconds remaining in the game on a Davontae Lowe 1-yard run. The touchdown capped a 24-point second half for Mabank.
Lowe had the game-winner plus another 6-yard touchdown run. Marcus Pruitt got the comeback started for the Panthers with a 71-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
The Panthers also added a 36-yard Kieran McDonald field goal in the half.
Mabank's comeback was helped along by three Athens second half turnovers: an interception and two fumbles.
The first half was a complete reversal, with Athens controlling the game offensively and holding the Panthers scoreless. Athens led at the half, 17-0.
The Hornets were led by Ty Arroyo with 105 yards rushing, including 78 in the first half.
Athens scored on a Jecorey Roberts 10-yard run, an 18-yard pass from Arroyo to Daniel Stanley, and a 27-yard field goal by Cesar Martinez.
The Hornets also got interceptions from Cedric Lowe and Dylan Marshall.
