The Athens Chamber of Commerce has announced that applications are open for the revived Leadership Athens program, set to empower the next generation of community leaders this fall.
"The Chamber is thrilled that Leadership Athens has officially made its return," said Chamber Executive Director Kristin Willingham. "This program has proven to shape many of those individuals in current leadership roles and it's an honor to be part of the process to help pave the way for the leaders of tomorrow."
The program offers an in-depth look at the community, covering leadership skills, community trusteeship, city and county operations, education, healthcare, public safety, and more. Participants will tour local entities and network with business leaders and policymakers.
"The knowledge, networking, and skills Leadership Athens provides is truly a unique experience that is a huge asset to not only the individuals but also our community," said Mrs. Willingham.
The program begins with a meet and greet on Aug. 27 from 5-7 p.m. at the Athens Partnership Center, 201 W. Corsicana. Classes run on the second Tuesday of each month from September to November 2024 and January to March 2025, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., concluding with a graduation on April 8, 2025.
An optional but highly recommended trip to the Austin State Government, which includes recognition on the House floor and a mixer, is scheduled for Feb. 11.
Having been a part of Leadership Athens in the past, I can confirm the profound impact this program can have. It lsn't just about learning leadership skills; it is about forging meaningful connections and gaining a deeper understanding of our community.
Candidates must be Athens residents or employees with a demonstrated interest in community leadership. Applications are due by Friday, Aug. 9, and selected candidates will be notified by Tuesday, Aug. 13. Tuition is $500, covering materials, meals, and local transportation.
