The LaPoynor Lady Flyers are still flying high.
With a 65-60 win over Leon in the Region III Championship last week, the Lady Flyers advanced to the State Semifinals. Next up: a showdown with San Saba on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Midway High School Arena in Waco.
LaPoynor's playoff run has been a testament to toughness. They battled past Hawkins in overtime in the Regional Semifinal, grinding out a 68-64 win, then held off Leon in the final. Four straight district champions stood in their way, and each time, the Lady Flyers found a way to win.
Now, they face another test in No. 14-ranked San Saba.
Head coach Chris Jost knows this opponent well -- he coached the Lady Dillos just two years ago and worked with every player on their current varsity roster.
“They play a lot like we do,” Coach Jost said. “They press, play up-tempo, and love to shoot threes. They had a tough district but an easier playoff path outside of their regional final against Flatonia. They’ve beaten some really good teams this year.”
LaPoynor has been battle-tested, showing their toughness in crucial moments. Jost is counting on that experience to carry them through one more time.
“Our girls had to get by four district champions in a row on our playoff journey, and at some point in each of those games, we had to dig deep,” he said. “We're hoping to find that grit again on Tuesday night.”
With a trip to the State Championship on the line, the Lady Flyers will need all the support they can get. Fans are encouraged to pack the stands in Waco as LaPoynor looks to take one more step toward a title.
