LaPoynor beats Centerville, 55-41, in Regional Quarterfinal
By Michael V. Hannigan
CORSICANA -- Some stingy defense and a one-handed man lifted LaPoynor over the Centerville Tigers, 55-41, in Regional Quarterfinal action Tuesday night.
Centerville roared out of the gate, going on a 14-0 run to start the game and making the Flyers look a step slow in the first quarter. Then Daniel Scott came off the bench to change everything.
The senior has been out with an injured right wrist for several weeks, but he returned for the first time Tuesday night, immediately providing a spark to the team and the crowd.
From when he first entered the game with a minute left in the first quarter until the start of the fourth quarter, the LaPoynor defense throttled Centerville and held the Tigers to just 8 points over 17 minutes.
Centerville's 41 points was its second-lowest output for the 2023-24 season.
Daniel's brother, Mann Scott, and Payton Parker added the firepower for the Flyers with both scoring 16 points. Parker hit three 3-pointers along the way.
Cort Reid added 9 points; Daniel Scott finished with 8 points; Zade Howard had 4; and Elijah Williams had 2.
Senior Trayce Schwab led Centerville with 16 points.
LaPoynor will face No. 13-ranked Shelbyville Friday night in the Region III Semifinal.
