Lady Storm wins tournament consolation trophy
FRUITVALE -- The Athens Christian Preparatory Academy Lady Storm took aim at Goliath but came up a little short.
The ACPA girls finished second in this weekend's Fruitvale Tournament, falling in the title game to the 4A Wharton Lady Tigers, 50-40.
"I'm sure they maybe thought the game would be no problem since we are a 1A TAPPS school," said Lady Storm Coach Ronnie Raines, "but they found out it was going to be a fight."
Wharton broke out to a 25-10 first-quarter lead. It was the only quarter during the entire tournament during which the Lady Storm were outscored.
"We pulled within 6 with a little over three minutes remaining in the game," said Coach Raines. "The big difference is we missed a few easy shots and free throws down the stretch."
The Lady Storm were led in the game by Riley Jackson with 21 points. Kaci Wallace added 8, Rachel Richardson 7, and Macy Elgin 4 to round out the scoring.
ACPA earned their place in the championship game by beating Harts Bluff (Mt. Pleasant), 53-35, and Fruitvale, 56-30.
"We learned a lot about our little team," said Coach Raines, "and the biggest win is the girls walked away with more confidence and are a better team."
