Lady Hornets are Bi-District Champions

MINEOLA -- The Athens Lady Hornets overcame a slow start and raced past the Farmersville Lady Farmers, 59-45, in bi-district playoff action Friday night.
The key sequence for Athens came early in the second quarter when the Lady Hornets trailed 8-3. In a three-minute span, Athens went on a 12-0 run fueled by the Lady Hornet defense. Athens forced eight Farmersville turnovers during that time and took a lead they never relinquished. Mimi McCollister started the run by hitting a layup, getting a steal and scoring another layup, and then sinking a three-pointer off another turnover, all in 22 seconds.
"When it mattered most, those girls stepped up and played defense," said Coach Jeff Teague. "That made all the difference in the world."
The Lady Hornets also fought through a substantial size disadvantage against Farmersville.
"We're not very big," said Teague, "but (our posts) scrap and fight and claw, and sometimes they get weird fouls called on them because they're not as big as the other team. They work their tails off. I can't say enough about how our 5'10" posts play against 6'2" girls."
The Lady Hornets were led by McCollister with 25 points. Janessa Kiser worked hard in the lane and came up with 17 points. McKenzie Hair added 7, Karlie Cook 6, and Kyra Dawson 4.
Farmersville was led by Reese Fetty with 22 points.
The Lady Hornets will play Gilmer in the area round. The game is currently scheduled for Monday night in Whitehouse, but inclement weather could change that.
