Momentum is with the LaPoynor Lady Flyers and they’ll try to ride that wave all the way to a regional championship on Friday night.
LaPoynor (25-11) will face the Leon Lady Cougars (28-5) at 6:30 p.m. in the Class 2A Region III Final with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
The Lady Flyers punched their ticket to the regional final with a gritty overtime win against No. 7-ranked Hawkins on Monday, 68-64.
“The girls are recovering from our battle with Hawkins,” said LaPoynor head coach Chris Jost. “Our extra day of rest this week should help. On Friday, we're just looking to play our game and keep the momentum we've had over the past month.”
The Lady Flyers have won seven in a row and haven't lost in more than a month. Now, they turn their attention to Leon.
“Leon has a good ball club,” Coach Jost said. “They're well-coached, they're scrappy on defense, and they execute their offense. They have a pair of good guards who can score, and their big girls are solid – they rebound well and they can hit shots. They'll be a tough team to beat.”
Friday’s game will be played at Slocum High School, and Coach Jost is hoping for another strong turnout from the LaPoynor faithful.
“Winning in front of the packed gym we had on Monday night was a great experience for our girls,” he said. “We're hoping to have another huge LaPoynor crowd for the regional final in Slocum.”
Monday's performance in the semifinal showed the Lady Flyers won't back down from anyone. That's unlikely to change on Friday when there's a trip to the state tournament on the line.
