Lady Cardinals open season with win; Cardinals drop close one

Lady Cardinals 84 - Collin College 46
The No. 1-ranked Lady Cards took care of business in no-sweat fashion in their season opener Wednesday night in Plano.
Outscoring Collin College 27-7 in the final quarter, the Lady Cards put the finishing touches on an 84-46 win, which extended their winning streak to 19 games.
The Lady Cards are scheduled to return to action at home Wednesday, Jan. 27, against No. 3-ranked South Plains. Game time at Cardinal Gym is set for 5:30 p.m.
Noelle Yancy led five Lady Cards in double figures with 14 points. Mailyn Wilkinson and Taiyanna Jackson had 12 each and Mahoganie Williams and Mikayla Hutchinson netted 10 each. Wilkinson had four three-pointers.
Alexis Brown and Kaye Clark just missed double figures with nine and eight, respectively.
The Lady Cards led 42-24 at the half after outscoring Collin 25-11 in the second quarter.
Saturday’s game at Ranger has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues on the Ranger campus.
Kilgore 71 - Cardinals 69
Kilgore rallied from a 10-point deficit in the final 5:58 Wednesday night at Cardinal Gym to slip past the Cardinals for a 71-69 in in season-opening action.
Behind a second-half surge led by Anderson Mirambeaux, the Cardinals built at 61-51 lead before the Rangers stormed back with a furious finish. Mirambeaux scored the Cardinals’ first eight points of the second half en route to an 18-point performance.
Dashawn Davis, who led the Cardinals with 20 points, also fueled the Cardinals’ takeover of the scoreboard after having led 31-28 at halftime.
Trevon Fuller, who had the lone three-pointer for the Cardinals, finished with nine points and Sofara Rasas had seven.
The Kilgore win spoiled the head coaching debut of Mark Leslie, who is in his ninth year at the college.
The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action Saturday, going to Beeville to play Coastal Bend in a 4 p.m. tipoff. Coastal Bend fell 90-65 to Navarro in its opener Wednesday night.
The next home game for the Cardinals is Saturday, Jan. 30 vs. Jacksonville.
