Hornets stumble in Henderson, fall 29-0

HENDERSON - The Athens Hornets have been decimated by injuries and it showed Friday night in Henderson.
The Hornets lost to the Lions, 29-0, dropping their record to 4-2, 0-2.
Henderson moved to 2-2, 1-0.
Although the Hornets struggled with turnovers, losing three fumbles and throwing an interception, injuries were the main influence on the game.
By the end Friday, Athens was playing without it's starting QB, missing three of its top running backs, and it's starting H-back on offense. On defense, the Hornets were down three defensive linemen and two cornerbacks.
The Lions controlled the ball for 23:32 of the first half, scoring a pair of touchdowns to lead 15-0 at the half.
Only a pair of key fourth down stops by the Hornets kept the score respectable in the first half.
Daniel Stanley came in to quarterback the Hornets in the second half, providing a spark. He completed five passes to three different receivers for 43 yards, but turnovers and the inability to convert on third or fourth down stymied Athens.
The Hornets will get two weeks to rest and get healthy now with their open date next week. Athens will return to action Oct. 16 at home against Lindale.
