Hornets lock in defensively, move on past Sunnyvale

Athens turned a shutdown quarter into an Area Championship Friday night.

The Hornets held Sunnyvale without a field goal in the second quarter and pulled away for a 57-45 victory.

Athens outscored Sunnyvale 12-4 in the second quarter. Sunnyvale’s only points in the period came on four free throws. The defensive stretch helped Athens build a 26-16 lead at halftime.

The win moves the Hornets to 22-4 on the season and pushes Athens into the next round of the playoffs.

Athens will face Dallas Carter at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Kaufman. Carter will be the home team, and Athens will be the visitors.
