The Henderson County Historical Commission dedicated a Texas State Historical Marker Saturday.
The marker is for "Corporal David Brady Shelton & American Legion Post 173."
State Rep. Keith Bell and Henderson County Judge Wade McKinney both spoke at the dedication.
"Our history is the context to our present and celebrating our history and those that made it makes their contribution more real and alive today," said McKinney.
Corporal Shelton was the first Henderson County soldier killed in action in World War I and when the American Legion Post was established, they unanimously voted to name their post in his honor.
There were five men from Henderson County killed in action during the war. A total of 27 from the county lost their lives, some from illness, some in camp, and there was even one murder.
The marker was placed on the Trinity Valley Community College Athens Campus near the Adult Education/Ceramics Building. This building was original American Legion building from its inception through 1975.
