NAMI Greater Athens TX welcomes NFL Hall-of-Famer Charles Haley as the guest speaker for the "Empowering the Youth of Tomorrow" event on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Athens High School gymnasium. This event will include all AISD middle and high school students and staff, with limited seating available for the public.
"We are excited to welcome Charles Haley to speak with our youth and the community, as his journey highlights the importance of mental health and resilience," NAMI Greater Athens TX Affiliate Leader Ginger Morton said. "His message is one of hope and strength, inspiring the next generation to prioritize their well-being and overcome any challenges they face."
Haley, a former defensive end and linebacker, played for the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys and is the first player in NFL history to win five Super Bowls. After a successful playing career and a stint as a coach in the NFL, Haley was diagnosed with bipolar disorder following his retirement. Known for being vocal about his struggles, Haley has become an advocate for mental health awareness, urging individuals, especially athletes, to prioritize their mental well-being.
The event will feature an interview with Haley and Athens ISD coaches Desmond and Devon Bowie in a relaxed, on-stage setting. In addition to the interview, there will be informational booths on mental health and addiction available for attendees before and after the event. The goal is to break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about these important issues.
Attendees are reminded that the AISD clear bag policy will be in effect, and a driver's license will be required to enter the building.
